Admission to the Mr. MAL Contest is included in the full Leather Weekend Package.  Limited quantities of individual tickets ($35.00) are now on sale in Washington, DC at Lambda Rising, 1625 Connecticut Avenue, NW (and at Lambda Rising/Baltimore); also at The Leather Rack, 1723 Connecticut Avenue, NW.  Tickets will be sold during MAL Weekend at the Washington Plaza Hotel (10 Thomas Circle NW) and at the door ($45.00) on Sunday at Almas Temple.  Mr. MAL Contest begins at 1:00 PM.

Varla Jean Merman Loves A Foreign Tongue!

Mr. MAL 2008 entertainment will feature a live performance by Varla Jean Merman. Varla (aka Jeffery Roberson) who has appeared on Broadway in the role of "Mary Sunshine" in the revival of Chicago will perform his newest show Varla Jean Merman Loves A Foreign Tongue!  Jeffery recently won rave reviews in Shut Up Sweet Charlotte in New Orleans at Le Petit Theatre as both director and star.   His shows "Varla Jean Merman's I'm Not Paying For This," "Girl With A Pearl Necklace; An Act Of Love," "Under A Big Top," "Holiday Ham," "All Washed Up!" and "The Very Worst of Varla Jean Merman" have filled concert halls and cabarets across the world including the Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the New York Public Theater, and LA's Renberg Theatre.

 

Jeffery shared the 2003 Outfest Film Festival "Best Actor" Award and the Aspen HBO Film Festival "Best Actress" Award for his featured performance in "Girls Will Be Girls," and made his network television debut on ABC's "All My Children" in the recurring role of Rosemary Chicken.  Jeffery has appeared at the Long Wharf Theatre in Hartford Stage's production of THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP performing the roles originally made famous by Charles Ludlam.
